John Hunter Birmingham 1862
Very unusual Victorian silver presentation prize for marksmanship in 1873. The inscription in one cartouche reads “Presented in remembrance of the late Sergeant Tilley won by Private J. G. Keynes. 1873. The other cartouche reads “Defence not Defiance” a motto adopted by volunteers in response to the feared invasion by Napoleon III. The goblet is supported on three rifles with attached bayonets.
